Futures Markets:
Arabica : coffee futures closed higher for the week as recent selling came to an end. With Brazil on holiday, on Wednesday, action was dominated by switches and commercial book squaring ahead of the first notice day for the May position, which occurred on Thursday. Prices were under pressure due last minute origin price fixing and speculative liquidation, Trade and industry buying added support to the market. A possible turn up on long-term charts could attract fresh buying over the next few sessions. Friday's higher close was mainly down to short-covering before the weekend in a session characterized by thin volume - a broker described it as soporific!
Robusta : market continued to come under pressure, separated from the New York action. Origin selling and speculative liquidations caused the drops early in the week. Liffe certified stocks have dropped 30% since the high in September 2009. No fresh grading reported.
Currency : The coffee market appeared to pay no attention to the stronger US dollar which put pressure on the commodity markets. Stop-loss selling hammered the Euro to a one-year low on growing speculation that debt-laden Greece could default on its sovereign debt. The key level is US$ 1.32 vs €1.00. Sterling remains remarkably resilient trading above $1.53 and €1.14 all week.

Physical Markets:
Brazil : The frost season approaches - weather forecasters, exporters, brokers all blowing hot and cold or wet... not necessarily in that order. We have seen remarkable forward demand for Brazils.
Colombia : Invisible ingredient in a cup of coffee. Exports remain sporadic and quality not quite what it used to be. Prices remain firm.
Peru : A Peruvian organic, fair-trade coffee has been highly praised at a contest held by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Jaime Sucaticona, the president of the Central Organization of Smallholder Coffee Farmer Cooperatives in the Sandia Valleys, or Cecovasa, emphasized the quality of this gourmet variety that is grown in the Amazonian Andes of southern Peru. Cultivated and harvested at smallholder farms near the south-eastern town of Tunkimayo. Farms normally measures about 3 hectares, this Peruvian coffee was one of the "coffee of the year" winners in the "single-origin" category. Other winners of that same prize conferred by the SCAA, one of the world's largest coffee trade associations, included specialty coffees from Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, the U.S. state of Hawaii, Honduras, Kenya, Nicaragua and Panama.
Central America : Coffee exports from Mexico, Colombia, Peru and the Dominican Republic rose 3% year-on-year in March to 2,789,256 60-kg bags, according to the Guatemalan growers' group Anacafe which collates export figures from the region. In the same month last year exports from the group of nine washed Arabica producers were 2,708,650 bags.
Honduras : Crop reaches end of season. New offers hard to find.
Guatemala : Again season end is approaching - remaining fine qualities being fought for up by US and Japanese roasters at fancy prices.
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua : Season is over for another year and moist coffee sold out.
Tanzania : Coffee production in Tanzania in 2010/11 may rise 38% to 55,000 metric tons from 40,000 tons this season because of better weather according to Adolph Kumburu, Director General of the Tanzania Coffee Board. Preliminary estimates indicate output fell 41% in the current marketing season after a drought cut yields. The country, like the rest of East Africa, experienced a prolonged drought in the second half of the year. A replanting program is being carried out in Tanzania as part of an effort to increase production to 100,000 tons in 2015.
Kenya : Heavy rains prevalent, fly crop coffees available for export from end of May. Prices remain firm.
Uganda : coffee exports for April may fall 10.6% to 184,000 60-kg bags compared with the same month last year due to heavy rains, according to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. Uganda has become a key player in the production of Robusta coffee after a crisis in former leading African producer Ivory Coast slashed production. It is the continent's second biggest coffee grower after Ethiopia.
UK : Starbucks plans to open 50 new stores in the UK and Ireland in 2010 according to a Reuters report quoting the Managing Director for the UK and Ireland, Darcy Willson-Rymer. Starbucks will also refurbish around 130 stores in the UK and Ireland this year to enhance design and the customer experience. Four coffee shops in London will be completely refurbished this summer. The new coffee shops in the UK and Ireland will be located in populous centres on high streets, road ways and in residential neighbourhoods. "You look at it in terms of where the customers are."
